The Music Soap Series: connecting soap with music.

This musical period gave me a bit of a challenge, because there is so much complexity and virtuosity in the Baroque period, but also a great deal of subtlety and nuance. I listened to a large variety of music from this period and felt most drawn to the fugues and toccatas of Bach for the soap inspiration. I have always loved fugues: the concept of taking one musical theme and transposing it into all of the voices through use of octaves, fourths and fifths, but maintaining the tonal color throughout. So I decided to do the same with the soap. I chose a deep green-teal for the "primary fugal" passage, and then mixed the base color with Klein Blue for a deeper tone, blue and charcoal for the deepest tone, and titanium dioxide for a much lighter tone. To emulate the virtuosity and complexity of this time, I layered the colors using a slant technique and sculpting texture throughout, while dusting with a mix of gold and silver as well. The scent is an exciting blend that fit this soap more perfectly than I could have dreamed. With a top note of juniper and citrus; middle of eucalyptus, mint, lemon and lime; and bottom of lavender and rosemary, this fragrance is crisp and tantalizing. It draws you in with a clean, elegant scent, that is refreshing and bold, while nuanced between citrus and herbal. It was a perfect match to the balance of complexity and subtlety found in the Baroque period.

(**This fragrance was updated in September 2022 to a fragrance blend with better staying power than the original ‘Crisp Juniper’.)

The Baroque time period (1600-1750) featured the use of keys over modes, especially as music became much more complex and intricate. Sadly (for me - ha!), composers also started moving away from vocal music towards instrumental music, which inspired the creation of many new instruments. Music was also becoming a part of society and was more easily accessible.
